CleanDye

The item you are holding saved an average 25-30 litres of water compared to a conventionally dyed garment.

To color our garments, we use DyeCoo’s Dye-Ox 4.0, the world’s first 100% waterless textile dyeing machine. Instead of water, we use reclaimed carbon dioxide to dye fabrics, which is then recycled for the next dye cycle.

Here’s how it works: the machine puts CO2 under a lot of pressure so that it enters a “supercritical” state, somewhere between a liquid and a gas. This supercritical CO2 is able to dissolve the dye and carries it deep into the fabric, before evaporating back into a gas that is recycled and reused.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Water is a finite resource, and we keep demanding more and more of it. Each year the world uses 5 trillion liters (1.3 trillion gallons) of water for fabric dyeing alone — that’s enough to fill 2 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. Since our process is 100% waterless, we do not contribute to this massive problem.

Because our technology uses reclaimed carbon dioxide instead of water, it does not require process chemicals or salts to make the dye stick to the fabric. No process chemicals means that no harmful wastewater or sludge is released into the environment.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Around 1/5 of industrial water pollution globally can be attributed to the dyeing and treatment of textiles. The conventional dyeing process results in wastewater that contains large amounts of chemicals — a toxic mixture known in the industry as “sludge.” In many countries, this sludge can pollute water sources used for fishing, drinking and bathing in surrounding areas. Our dye process does not release sludge, making us better neighbors to our community in Vietnam.

Our CleanDye factory in Vietnam is unlike any dye factory in the world. Because the dye process is fully contained within DyeCoo machines, the factory environment is drier, safer and more pristine than traditional dyehouses.

To ensure that our factory environment is dignified and empowering, we are committed to implementing the principles of the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI), a supply chain management system incorporating human rights and labour standards from the International Labor Organization (ILO), the United Nations (UN) Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Other factory highlights include:

  • Circular Economy In Action: Our technology uses carbon dioxide to dye materials, then evaporates it back into a gas that can be recycled and reused — a circular process with minimal waste.
  • Energy-Efficient Process: Because we don’t need to clean wastewater, dry fabric after dyeing or heat up water, our factory is very energy-efficient.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

In conventional dyehouses, workers can be exposed to harmful chemicals that can lead to skin reactions, respiratory issues and even, in rare cases, cancer. Because our coloration is process chemical-free, our colleagues who work in our factories can come to work without needing to worry about their health and safety. CleanDye is committed to a different way of doing business, one that is clean inside and out.
